Meet the Hedgehogs

  • Henrietta

    Henrietta

Henrietta the hedgehog was found badly injured by the local wildlife expert. She had gotten caught up in fishing wire as a baby and as she’d started to grow, the wire was cutting into her skin. She had a lengthy operation to remove all the wire and was then on large amounts of pain killers and antibiotics. The wildlife expert contacted Jodie and asked if she would take her over winter as she was still very young and would not survive hibernation. She needed to be kept very warm so that she wouldn’t try to hibernate and also she needed to be given all her meds. She lived in the house over winter with Jodie and Jodie got her a special exercise wheel made. In the wild hedgehogs travel up to 2km a night so Jodie knew she needed the exercise. Henrietta loved her wheel so much that she spent 8 hours a night in it and Jodie loved falling asleep to the sound of her in the wheel, knowing she was happy. When spring came, Jodie had a conversation with the wildlife expert again who agreed that now Henrietta was practically tame and had no survival skills, she probably wouldn’t survive in the wild upon release. So the decision was made to build her a large enclosure in the garden (with her wheel obviously) and to let her live there in safety. Henrietta has all her needs catered for, with the best food and things to keep her occupied. Hedgehogs are solitary so they don’t need a friend and are quite happy alone. Jodie spends lots of time with her still and she’s a very happy little girl who will happily climb all over people and be held.

  • Hugo

    Hugo

Hugo came to us with a leg injury as a baby in the middle of winter. He was poorly but also too little to hibernate. We fixed his leg with the help of a wildlife vet and then we kept him over winter. By the time spring came he was too tame and dependant on us to release. He now lives with our other hedgehogs in an huge enclosure and is a very cheeky little boy. He’s very greedy and loves his food so much !! He knows what time dinner is and he comes out and waits by the door every night for Jodie to feed him. He’s very cute and confident and likes to crawl all over Jodie while she’s in the enclosure. He’s unlike any other hedgehog we’ve met as it was like he was tame from the moment he arrived. He’s all better now and spends all night running in his wheel !!
